Making Waves on Instagram

This video should serve as an eyeopener to what we’re about to tell you.

Scientists and whale experts estimate that only 5% of whale deaths due to ship collisions are reported. This includes fast speed ferries, cruise ships, fishing ships, and cargo ships.

That means that around 95% of deaths go unreported.

This statistic comes from an amazing documentary called “Collision” by @oceansoulsfilms that follows researchers and scientists as they investigate global whale collisions.

Why do so many go unreported? Well, many of these ships are so big they don’t even know when they’ve hit a whale. Also, although some individuals wash up on shore where a cause of death can be determined, most struck whales typically sink to the bottom of the ocean when they die, making their deaths are extremely hard to trace.

Another crazy fact is that MOST whales breed and feed close to shore and in port yet the speed speeds allowed in these areas is fast enough to kill them.

What can be done? Comment on the @imo_hq (The International Maritime Organization) instagram and urge them to create whale safe shipping lanes AND require them to make boats SLOW DOWN to under 10 knots close to ports.

Iceland is at a crossroads. The license to hunt endangered fin whales expired in December. We urge the Icelandic government not to renew the hunting license. Whales are vital to the health of the oceans and our survival on the planet.

Whales are the largest animals on earth, and as the Icelandic ethical review board has said, there is no humane way to kill whales.

Iceland must take the bold step forward and make whaling a thing of the past. For all of us, and our future.

Please send a message to the ministers in Iceland by clicking the link in our bio.

This year, we have a chance to prevent horrible deaths like the mother and calf that lost their lives last summer.

The fate of 750 fin whales rests in the hands of @bjarkeyg, the new Minister of Fisheries in Iceland.

The minister is under immense political pressure to issue a new license, and she needs OUR support to back her up with her decision to end whaling.

Please share this video, and tag the minister of fisheries @bjarkeyg in your stories, or comment on her instagram and let her know you support her effort to end whaling.
