Bjarkey Olsen Gunnarsdóttir @Bjarkeyg, is Iceland’s new Minister of Fisheries, she is part of the Green Party @vinstrigraen against whaling. Two whalers, have now asked for new whaling licenses: Kristan Loftsson to hunt fin whales and Steinar Larusson to hunt minke whales. If granted over 750 whales will be legally killed.
Whaling in Iceland has become a heavily politicized topic. Politicians often face complex requests, backdoor deals and have to concede to compromises with the opposition. In fact the previous Minister resigned after a vote of no confidence.
So we’re asking you to give @bjarkeyg the love and support she needs to save whales and not succumb to political pressures.

OPS has long been committed to the conservation and protection of biodiversity. To celebrate Earth Day 2024, we’re proud to join hands with @eowilsonbiodiversityfoundation to lift up a special message from longtime conservationist Harrison Ford.
In his message, Ford asks us to pay attention to the quiet voices of biodiversity that are so critical
to the enduring sustainability of our planet. As Ford states so eloquently, “The most meaningful thing
we can do in our time on Earth is to ensure that the rope isn’t too frayed for the next generation.”
Ford has shared his message in support of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation’s Half-Earth
Project, which is inspiring informed collective action to save the biosphere and using geospatial
information to inform what network of places should be prioritized for conservation in order to
protect the most species.

Happy Earth Day 🌎🌱!! To celebrate this year, we wanted to support our community by suggesting 4 things you can do to help planet earth.
1. If food security allows, shift to a plant based diet: A plant based diet requires less land, water, and energy compared to industrial animal agriculture. This leads to lower greenhouse gas emissions and less pressure on ecosystems. Additionally, avoiding animal products can help mitigate deforestation, conserve water resources, and reduce pollution from livestock farming.
2. Fly less: Did you know a single round-trip transatlantic flight can emit as much CO2 as the average person produces in a year from all other activities? Opting to travel more locally can reduce your carbon imprint by leaps and bounds.
3. Waste less food: Wasting food on an individual level has significant negative impacts on the environment, economy, and society. It leads to the inefficient use of resources, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, exacerbates food insecurity, and raises ethical concerns about fairness in food distribution. Reducing food waste is essential for creating a more sustainable and equitable food system and mitigating environmental degradation. Composting is also a great way to utilize your food scraps for the better, by turning them into nutrient rich soil.
4. Avoid single use plastics: Avoiding single-use plastics on an individual basis helps the environment by reducing plastic pollution, which poses severe threats to wildlife, ecosystems, and human health. By using alternatives such as reusable bags, bottles, and containers, individuals can minimize the production and disposal of plastic waste, conserving resources, reducing energy consumption, and mitigating the harmful impacts of plastic pollution on land and marine environments.
